Static Apnea is a breath hold for time.  The athlete prepares by doing a series of breathing exercises to oxygenate the system, slow the heart and quiet the mind.  In competition, a safety diver uses a system of taps to verify the diver is OK.  When the diver finishes the breath hold, they must remove their mask, signal OK and say “I’m OK” to the judge within 15 seconds of ending the breath hold, otherwise the athlete is disqualified.
