Freediving challenges the athlete in events of time, distance or depth, all on a single breath of air. As a sport, it is one that requires the body to go through physiological changes in order to reach its potential. As a recreational activity, it allows the freediver to experience and interact with the underwater world in a way not possible on scuba.
